There is no authoritative worldwide average for the time it takes to earn a judo black belt. Promotion records are held by national federations, their pathways differ, and no global cohort follows beginners from their first class to first dan.

## Why the Timeline Varies

A first-dan candidate normally has to progress through the federation’s kyu grades and then satisfy its dan requirements. The timeline can change with:

- Training continuity and attendance.
- Technical competence and safe randori.
- Kata requirements.
- Competition points or an alternative technical pathway.
- Minimum age and time in grade.
- Examination schedules and federation administration.

## Use the Rules for Your Federation

The IJF introduced updated grading resources in 2026, including a colour-belt programme, dan regulations, and a belt-grades guide. They are available on the [official IJF grading documents page](https://www.ijf.org/ijf/documents/16).

National bodies implement the pathway and may offer different competitive and technical routes. For example, the British Judo Association’s current [dan grading requirements](https://www.britishjudo.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Dan-Grading-Requirements-FINAL-1.pdf) specify minimum age, current grade, time in grade, competition points, and kata for each route. That is a British example, not a global judo average.

Before planning a date, ask your club which federation registers its grades and read that federation’s current syllabus.

## Competition and Technical Routes

Some systems let active competitors accumulate promotion points through eligible contests. Others provide a technical route with a skills examination, kata, and longer activity requirements. Neither route is simply a count of classes.

Competition can provide evidence under a competitive scheme, but competing by itself does not guarantee promotion. The relevant federation and examiners decide whether every requirement has been met.

## What to Work On

Instead of targeting an unsupported number of years:

- Train consistently at a pace you can sustain.
- Keep your membership and grade records current.
- Learn the syllabus used by your federation.
- Practice the required kata throughout the year.
- Ask your coach which grading route applies to you.
- Confirm requirements again before entering an examination.

## Keeping Promotion Records

Dojo administrators need records that reflect their federation’s requirements without treating attendance as an automatic promotion rule. MatGoat’s [judo software](https://matgoat.com/en/judo-software/) keeps grades, promotion dates, notes, and class attendance together so instructors can review a judoka’s history before an examination.

## Conclusion

How long does a judo black belt take? It takes as long as needed to complete your federation’s kyu progression and first-dan requirements. Any fixed worldwide range should be treated as anecdotal unless it comes with a defined federation, sample, period, and method.
