# Add teachers and administrators to your academy

Add teachers or administrators, reuse existing accounts and review what changes when you grant or remove a staff role in your academy.

Teachers and administrators hold a role within an academy. One account can belong to several academies with different permissions, so check where you are working before adding staff. Giving someone a team role does not require a second account when they already use MatGoat.

## Open Teachers

From academy settings, open **Teachers**. Teachers can view the list, while adding staff, changing relevant roles or removing someone from the team requires an administrator. If you only see the list, check your role before looking for an action you are not allowed to use.

The list represents the current academy’s team. Administrator access is broader than teacher access, so decide who needs to manage configuration and who only needs to work with particular students or classes. A staffing decision should not depend on which option happens to be selected first.

## Add someone without duplicating their account

1.  Open **Add teacher / admin**
2.  Select an existing student or enter a name and email
3.  Choose the role they should hold in this academy
4.  Save and check the person and role in the list

Selecting an existing student reuses their account. The system also checks the email before creating a new identity. When a new account is necessary, an invitation is sent; when the person already has an account, do not assume they will receive another complete signup journey.

Managed accounts without independent access, accounts awaiting deletion or archived members may need their situation resolved before becoming staff. Do not change the email or create a duplicate simply to bypass such a restriction.

## Prepare access and permissions

For a teacher, review [permissions and assigned schedules](https://matgoat.com/en/support/configure-teacher-permissions/) after adding them. A teacher role does not mean the person should see every personal field or manage every schedule. Administrators retain a different scope from these restricted teacher permissions.

Where offered, an administrator can generate a login link to help a teacher access their account. The link provides account access: share it only with its intended recipient, never in screenshots, public documents or a group announcement.

Before using the action, check the selected person’s name. A valid link sent to the wrong recipient still grants access to the wrong person’s account rather than merely inviting them to view the academy.

## Remove the staff role

Removing a teacher returns their academy role to student; it does not delete their account, attendance history or payments. You cannot use this action to remove yourself from the team.

Check the resulting role and any access they still need as a student. If the intention is to end academy membership, use the appropriate workflow on [their profile](https://matgoat.com/en/support/student-profiles/), treating that as a separate decision from removing teacher permissions.
