# Log belt changes and configure promotion alerts

Keep each student's belt history, set how many classes each stripe or belt change needs and see who is ready for promotion in Student Alerts.

Belt history records when a student started training and which belt or grade changes they have completed. It is available for disciplines that use belts. Activities without that ladder, such as boxing or MMA, do not display the same history card or promotion settings.

## Record an actual promotion

Open the student’s profile and locate belt history. Teachers can record changes; administrators configure promotion thresholds. Check the discipline and existing history before adding an entry, especially when documenting a promotion that took place before the latest one already recorded.

1.  Choose the action to record a belt change
2.  Review the previous belt and select the new belt and grade
3.  Enter the actual change date and an optional note
4.  Save and check both history and the profile’s current belt

The date cannot be in the future. The current belt follows the latest entry for that discipline, so recording an older change does not replace a later promotion. Removing the latest entry can move the profile back to the remaining previous change.

## Record the starting belt or correct a category

The first-belt option documents the start of training. It does not request the same previous-belt information as a promotion and uses the discipline’s available starting ranks. Creating a student with a belt does not guarantee that a corresponding historical entry already exists.

The student-category dialog can correct category, belt and grade without logging a promotion. Use it to correct profile information rather than to document a grading. A children’s belt category and age calculated from birth date are separate concepts.

## Set promotion targets

An administrator opens the promotion settings and reviews values for each belt and grade step. Available choices depend on the discipline and adult or child category. Not every belt has suggested values; an unconfigured condition may not produce a readiness alert.

Thresholds identify students worth reviewing. They do not award promotions automatically or replace the instructor’s assessment. Check attendance and history before recording the final change, particularly when importing older records or correcting dates.

## Interpret the student’s progress

The profile may show training completed before MatGoat and progress since the relevant latest change. Previous-training credit belongs to that promotion period. After another promotion it does not continue as a permanent balance applicable to every later belt.

Promotion progress and weighted attendance statistics do not necessarily use the same calculation. A difference between the figures is therefore not automatically an error.
